Trends in Bronx Housing Finance through COVID-19

In this post, we will focus on financing trends among owners and investors in private, rent-stabilized housing in New York City. Below is an attempt to capture some of the changes in the housing finance landscape over the past number of months and particularly since the beginning of the current public health crisis. Without predicting the future, we hope to raise a number of questions as to where that market is headed and how tenants might be affected, with an emphasis on data and  examples from the Bronx.

Cut Short, UNHP Tax Program, Helped Bronxites File for Free

Despite the need to close our NYC Free Tax Prep Program on March 14th due to the rising health concerns from COVID 19, UNHP was able to assist 920 low-to moderate income Bronx residents file their taxes for free and access on-site financial and affordable housing services.

Affordable Housing Lottery Main Draw for UNHP 2018 Bronxtober Fest

On Saturday, October 20th, UNHP held its 2nd annual Bronxtober Fest – offering a wide range of on-the-spot assistance for the crowd of over 80 Bronx residents. Thanks to our Fordham University and Manhattan College student volunteers, over 60 attendees enrolled in Housing Connect, NYC’s online affordable housing lottery.

City Liens Are an Issue in Many NYC “HOODs”

UNHP created the Home Ownership Database (HOOD) to reach out to homeowners of 1-4 family homes who have fallen behind on their City liens, such as water and sewer bills, and tax liens. A recent look at the data reveals that neighborhoods as different as the Upper East Side and Jamaica, Queens have much in common when it comes to delinquent City liens.

​June 11th Fair Offers Extravaganza of Credit Resources

On Wednesday, June 11, University Neighborhood Housing Program (UNHP), a non-profit with over 30 years of experience, will sponsor a Credit Extravaganza at the Northwest Bronx Resource Center located at 2715 Bainbridge Avenue Bronx, NY from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. The Credit Resource Fair will help attendees review their credit and meet with advisors about ways to stretch their incomes, and create better spending habits.
