Paying it Forward

by UNHP

Saundra T. is a retired outpatient mental health supervisor at Einstein Medical Center.  She worked there for 34 years and is grateful to her union for her pension. Saundra is making her pension and social security work extra hard- her retirement income is supporting her and helping to pay for her granddaughter’s tuition at NYU.  Saundra’s granddaughter spent two years at Sullivan County Community College before transferring to NYU and dreams of becoming an attorney.  Saundra is happy to help her granddaughter and hopes that her support will “set her up for success.”    Saundra owed a small amount in federal taxes because the education tax credit was claimed by her daughter, who is also supporting her daughter's college dreams. Like many other New Yorkers she qualified for the NY 201 credit, making her state refund $63. Saundra lives alone- but is happy for the solitude.  “I grew up in my grandparent’s house with 15 children and now I am happy for some quiet.”
