Responding to the widespread availability and use of predatory and fringe financial products such as Refund Anticipation Checks (RAC), pawnshops, rent-to-own stores, pricey pre-paid debit cards, and high-fee check cashing in our neighborhoods, University Neighborhood Housing Program offers free financial education and empowerment services to help residents avoid these services and address pressing financial concerns.

UNHP works to reduce the use of predatory services by offering topic-specific workshops, community resource fairs, and financial education opportunities. Community Resource Fairs provide on-the-spot assistance and an opportunity for follow-up to the attendees. UNHP also provides workshops around budgeting and money management to groups organized by other local nonprofits.

Members and staff of the Bronx Financial Access Coalition (BxFac), Webster Bank, LES People’s Federal Credit Union, and NYPD Officer Felix gather in front of the Bronx People’s Credit Union branch on December 9th, 2024 to celebrate its opening. UNHP, as a member of the BXFac was instrumental in bringing this new branch of the LESPFCU to the Bronx! Credit Unions offer great, low-cost products for members and provide an accessible alternative to predatory financial services.

UNHP offers one-on-one coaching by trained professionals, free of charge. To offer these services, UNHP works collaboratively with Ariva to offer 1:1 financial counseling. Call or text us at (718)933-3102 to make an appointment.

Working one-on-one with a trained financial coach, you can learn how to manage your personal finances. These sessions are geared to your needs, and topics can include student loans, debt management, budgeting, and planning for the future.

UNHP collaborated with Fordham Bedford Community Services to assist neighborhood residents in applying for the newly opened Section 8 waiting list. Financial stability often hinges on how much of your income goes towards rent. Close to half of the households in Community Board 5 have high rent burdens.
