Multifamily Housing in Distress

Preserving existing private rental multifamily housing is key to ensuring enough decent affordable housing for low and moderate-income residents.

The Building Indicator Project (BIP) is one of our biggest and most successful endeavors in our long history of multifamily preservation, research, and housing organizing.  The report New York City’s Multifamily Housing in Distress uses our own BIP data to show that the number of financially and physically distressed multifamily units is increasing.  This was the basis of UNHP’s 2011 forum where trends in New York City housing were discussed by a panel of experts and discussed with community members, lenders, public agencies, regulators, and foundations in attendance.
