University Neighborhood Housing Program celebrates its 30th Anniversary in the Northwest Bronx this year. Our roots go deep into the community reinvestment movement that saw Bronx residents win amazing victories over redlining and disinvestment. In the last 30 years, our borough has been transformed. Vacant buildings have been reclaimed through a combination of community, private sector, and government efforts and now provide affordable homes for thousands of Bronx residents. The lessons of this success must help frame efforts to address the growing crisis of affordability in the Bronx, as we are now at a point where things just aren’t working for a growing number of Bronx residents. A majority of households in one Bronx Community District, for instance, now pay more than half of their income on rent each month, and many other districts are approaching that level. The solutions have to include improved work opportunities and wages in addition to creative housing programs. Our report, Nowhere to Go, will present the latest demographic, economic and housing indicators and a discussion of specific steps we can take to make things work in the Bronx again.
Please join us for a brief presentation, panel response and lively discussion!
